Dalat ,Vietnam - Day 24 - 26/03/2010

We left the Guesthouse early in the morning and head towards Dalat. The Coach arrived early(quite on time) in the morning and our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Throughout the morning, he filled us in on the history of Vietnam although others were catching up on sleep. Quite interesting though. We had a little stopover at a villa for breakfast( Baguette and eggs). Soon after, it was back to the road again.

The journey to Dalat is very long. Along the way, I get to see the different side of Vietnam: the rural/undeveloped areas. The rice fields, torn down and empty houses and erected buildings was a common sight. This still shows that Vietnam is still a developing country. We had various stopover at certain places throughout the journey(besides toilet breaks): Lunch at Bao Loc,visit Dambri Waterfall and a tea plantation.

We reached Dalat in the evening around 1900 hours(local time). We checked-in at Gold Night Hotel(2 stars) and followed by dinner. Muslim students dined in at a vegetarian restaurant. Food there was amazing.

After that was free at leisure. This was the perfect time to explore the European style highland city. We went shopping for souvenirs. The city at night is quite vibrant and well lit. Of course, foreign tourist are a common sight too. There are a lot of good places to dine and hangout too. After a long day, we stop by a roadside stall selling hot soy milk. Ideal drink to compliment the cold weather.

Visitors, don't forget to bring winter clothes if you're planning to travel to Dalat unless you can tolerate the cold weather.
Dawn. Sceneries in Vietnam is just lovely.

Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam - Day 23 - 25/03/2010

We had presentation in the morning about our understanding of certain topic about Vietnam(i.e. Cultural). Nothing much interesting to write about.

After lunch, most of us packed our bags for our 5D4N Dalat-Nha Trang tour which we'll be embarking the next day. Again, an uneventful afternoon. Evening we went down to the VNU student's dormitory after our friends,Page White, invited us down. The dormitory is quite densely populated with students around Vietnam. Not to forget that the dormitory is heavily guarded and we were halted by security. It didn't took long for Page White to arrive and convince the guard on duty to let us in and proceed further.

The student life is very vibrant there. They have a KTV, night club and few restaurants there that catered to their daily needs. They even have activities like martial arts class there(it was a Taekwando class during my visit). We spent the entire night before our trip in the KTV, singing to Vietnamese pop music and some hits from 60s/70s.No alcohol this time round. The dormitory rooms is a bit cramped, one room holds about 8 people(no photos).

We went back to the Guesthouse soon after. I went to bed early to rest up for the 5D4N trip wondering what's in store for me during the trip.

Our Vietnamese counterpart are the most hyperactive bunch.
Page White(sitting on the floor in white) was the one who invited us.

Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam - Day 21 - 23/03/2010

Today's is our last day of our having a Vietnamese lecturer to teach us. A much more interesting( I personally think it's the best)topic was covered today: Vietnam in 21st Century:Challenges through innovation. The lecturer's name was Nguyen Ngoc Tho. I shan't elaborate much because this topic is quite in-depth. Generally, it's about how the "Older generation thinking" of Vietnamese people became a hindrance to the modernization of Vietnam.

Afternoon, we had another exchange program, this time round with students from VNU International University. Much more lively and many of them have no problem understanding English. Made new friends too.

Our guest lecturer, his topic is quite elaborated and interesting.

He's quite fluent in Mandarin too.

Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam - Day 19 - 21/03/2010

We went out to an upscale shopping mall in HCMC to catch a movie(Alice in Wonderland 3D). The rest of the group went to bowling alley. I did not join them and went wandering around the mall(forgot the name). The day was uneventful. In other words, nothing much happens but I'm gonna talk about coffee here.

Vietnam is the worlds second largest exporter of coffee behind Brazil, no doubt coffee lovers will flock to Vietnam to get a taste of the local coffee. The local coffee is thick, sweet and had a strong taste. The coffee is usually freshly brewed in a little metal apparatus placed over a cup; just lift it off when it has cooled enough to touch. Well, there's apparently no Starbucks  in HCMC.

During our visit, we usually frequent in Highland Coffee outlets.
Highland Coffee is an upscale chain that serves western-style as well as local-style brews. The price is slightly expensive. Outlets are easily found throughout major tourists location. However, quality is quite disappointing for some of the drinks. Definitely not the place to visit to savor the taste and authenticity of Vietnamese coffee if you're on budget.

Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam - Day 18 - 20/03/2010

Celebrated my birthday in one of the many Lotteria outlets in HCMC.Well, for fast-food lovers, there's no MacDonalds in HCMC. There's KFC, Jollibee, Lotteria to name a few existing chains.

Me and Ms. Auyong.

Love the cake although it's too creamy.

Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam - Day 12 - 14/03/2010

On this day, a few of us went out to Dam Sen Park with few of our Vietnamese friends( Mi Tom and her friends).
The park was located at District 11 of HCMC. Ok, here's the address:

3 Ð Hoa Binh, District 11, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
For more info, visit this website : Dam Sen Water Park

Quite an ideal place for tourists looking for slightly eccentric fun in HCMC..The park is huge(30 segment) and we didn't explore the entire place. The sights of foreign tourists are rare. Do give this place a visit if you're in HCMC.

Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam - Day 11 - 13/03/2010

The Guesthouse electricity supply was cut off. It was announced the day before thus some of us decide to head out to HCMC as staying in the Guesthouse on a hot day wasn't ideal.

We took a local bus service( first time for since I set foot in VN). Bus fare is relatively cheap ( about 3,000 to 5,000 VND). Fixed cost no matter the distance of travel but buses can be overcrowded too. It's safer to travel in bus than to take other alternatives.

We had lunch at a restaurant called 'Quan An Ngon'. A large and busy chain restaurant that serves mainly Vietnamese cuisines which includes regional specialties from around Vietnam. It has the interior of an atmosphric old French villa. Prices of food is reasonable and the dishes are amazing.

Here's the address:  160 Pastuer Street

Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam - Day 9 - 11/03/2010

On this day, we went out to a tour to the historical sites in HCM city.

Cu Chi Tunnels
We went to the Cu Chi Tunnel in the morning. This is one of the important sites during the Vietnam war. On the way I got more views of everyday life in the city. Simple and humble. Our trip throughout the day was unguided except for Cu Chi. After that we went around a pre-defined route with our sarcastic yet humorous guide and we got explanations on how the tunnels was used by the Vietnamese during the war, how they got in and out, traps they made etc. We even got to crawl through a tunnel made to give us an impression of what the real tunnels are like. Tight, small space and somehow I managed to fit in. The tunnel is quite humid and for those with claustrophobia, I wouldn't recommend you to try. For fans of guns, there's a live weapon firing range along the route. You can fire all sorts of weapons like AK-47, M-16 and M-60. The price of shooting varies, depending on which weapon you choose. There are souvenirs shop that sells local handicrafts, shirts and other war trophies (replicas though) and badges. Thus, for history buffs or those who want to catch a glimpse of the importance of guerrilla warfare during Vietnamese war, this place is definitely worth a visit. Just remember to bring along mosquito repellent and hat/cap.

War Remnants Museum
We set off towards HCMC in the afternoon( We had lunch at a nearby restaurant in Cu Chi). War Remnants Musuem houses exhibitions of American phase during Vietnam War. Exhibitions include photographs of effects of war like Agent Orange and also massacres that were carried out. Outside the museums, there are military vehicles on displays. There's also a section of exhibition of replicas of torture chambers and cells of prisoners outside the museum. You shouldn't miss it cause it gives you the experience of how the atmosphere of those days were like. It's kind of sad and depressing to walk around the museum, looking at photos of war scenes and its aftermath. To conclude, this place is a must visit for those who wished to learn more about Vietnamese war.

Sadly, the above mentioned  places were the only places we visited during our historical tour. Due to time constraints, we didn't visit into the Reunification Palace and never step foot inside the palace throughout our 6 weeks of stay in Vietnam. Even a photo of the palace couldn't make up for it. However, when I get the chance to go back, this palace will surely be on my lists of 'must-visits'.

Reunification Palace. A must-visit place.

Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam - Day 6 - 08/03/2010

Day 6 was the conclusion of Vietnamese language lesson. Overall. I felt satisfied with the lesson albeit short duration. The teacher was bubbly and always gets us involved in activities.

Afternoon, we had an exchange program with the VNU Faculty of Economics and Law students. It went smoothly. I got the chance to interact with the students. The usual session of ice-breaking games followed by mass phototakings and exchanges of contacts. Plus side, I made a lot of new friends.

Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam - Day 4 - 06/03/2010

Morning, we went down to a nearby University campus (University of Sports) to take part in an environmental program. Basically we just planted trees but it was fun and tiring. Standing under the hot sun, sweating out with few volunteers from the Vietnamese counterpart. Hoeing and watering tirelessly. It was heartwarming to see that they are aware of the major environmental changes that is ongoing. Initially, one would though that only citizen in well-developed countries are more pro-active in environmental work.Although it's a small scale project, being an ERS, I'm proud to take part..

Another trip to HCM city in the afternoon. We went to Ben Thanh Market and it's twin market Binh Tay located in the Chinatown district. That was during the day. Ben Thanh was quite a good place to shop but you have to be cautious. It's a tourist trap as prices of items could elevate to 50%-100% of the original price. I didn't bought anything here although I'm tempted to. There are plenty of shirts you can buy for friends and families. I would recommend bargaining but you have to be persistent in order to secure a deal with shopkeepers. Do take note of the locals that always take advantage of tourists, it's hard to spot one as they are always friendly. Just be on the lookout and it's wise to scout the entire market before making purchases.

Binh Tay was much more of the type of market for groceries(wholesale goods) but items are cheap. There are clothings and footwear you can buy at affordable prices.

Located outside Ben Thanh is the night market. It only opens from 6pm onwards. Ben Thanh closes at 6pm. Here the night market is much more of safer to shop and a good place to buy souvenirs. You can have dinner here too.

I had dinner at one of the few halal restaurants in HCM city. Halal@Saigon. Here's the address:

30 Dong Du Street, D1, is opposite to the Indian Jamia Mosque, near Sheraton Hotel.

Food there, I would rate it about 3.7 out of 5. Serves Malaysian and Vietnamese cuisines. I highly recommend their Malaysian dishes although their Vietnamese is quite of good standard. The interior of the restaurant is well lavished. Pictures of the early years of the pioneer and old-school music enhances the atmosphere.  Price-range is quite mid-range and some are expensive. I wouldn't recommend this if you're on a budget but if you plan on dining here, come in a group of friends.

Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam - Day 3 - 05/03/2010

Day 3 started off with a lesson on Vietnam: much more on cultural and geographical aspects though not too in depth. Afternoon, we had a Vietnamese language lesson which was easy to pick up but hard to master. There's nothing much happening during the day apart from the lessons we had.

In the evening we ventured out to a village nearby for dinner followed by a welcome party at the Guesthouse. The party was organized by some of our friends. We got to know the others that were also staying at the Guesthouse. The usual ice-breaking games and exchanging of numbers, e-mail address etc.
